Pre-Pharmacy
Pharmacy schools do not typically require a specific major. However, general requirements for most pharmacy schools include at least a year of general biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, general physics, statistics, and calculus. Pre-pharmacy students at Mayville State University typically major in chemistry and/or biology. These majors each contain a specialization specific to preparing students for advanced study in medical or life sciences fields. Students may wish to consider a double major in these areas.
Each pharmacy school has its own undergraduate requirements, and so it is important to identify the school or schools to which you plan to apply. In addition to working with your Mayville State Academic Advisor, you should work with an advisor from the pharmacy school(s) of choice for specific requirements.
Students should consider these common requirements during their undergraduate studies:
- Academic prerequisites at the professional school.
- Maintaining a competitive GPA.
- Participate in extracurricular and community activities to develop and demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills.
- Documentation of experience gained through job shadowing may be expected.
- Many pharmacy schools do not require completion of an undergraduate degree provided all undergraduate curriculum requirements are completed. Be certain to work closely with your anticipated or preferred pharmacy school in completing coursework at Mayville State University.
- Work closely with advisors, faculty, and mentors who can help guide you through the process. Application to many pharmacy schools occurs through PharmCAS.
- Some pharmacy schools may require completion of an entrance exam. Be certain to identify any such requirements for your preferred pharmacy schools.
Students who declare a Pre-Pharmacy area of study are placed into the Chemistry major. If you wish to review or change your major or choice of pre-professional area of study, please work with your advisor.
