Pre-Medicine
Pre-Medicine students at Mayville State University typically major in biology and/or chemistry. These majors each contain a specialization specific to preparing students for advanced study in medical or life sciences fields. It is common, if planning on going to medical school, to double major in both.
Each medical school has its own undergraduate requirements, and so it is important to identify the medical school or schools to which you plan to apply. In addition to working with your Mayville State advisor, you should work with an advisor from your medical school(s) of choice for specific requirements.
Students should consider these common requirements during their undergraduate studies:
- Academic prerequisites at the medical school.
- Maintaining a competitive GPA.
- Pursue research opportunities in biology or chemistry.
- Participate in extracurricular and community activities to develop and demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills.
- Job shadowing physicians or volunteering in direct patient care settings.
- Work closely with advisors, faculty, and mentors who can help guide you through the process.
- Begin preparation for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) no later than during your junior year.
Students who declare a Pre-Medicine area of study are placed into the Biology major. If you wish to review or change your major or choice of pre-professional area of study, please work with your advisor.
