Pre-Dentistry

Dentistry schools do not typically require a specific major. However, general requirements for most dentistry schools include at least a year of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and general physics. Pre-dentistry students at Mayville State University typically major in chemistry and/or biology. These majors each contain a specialization specific to preparing students for advanced study in medical or life sciences fields. Students may wish to consider a double major in these areas.

Each dentistry school has its own undergraduate requirements, and so it is important to identify the school or schools to which you plan to apply. In addition to working with your Mayville State advisor, you should work with an advisor from the dentistry school(s) of choice for specific requirements.

Students should consider these common requirements during their undergraduate studies:

- Academic prerequisites at the professional school.

- Maintaining a competitive GPA.

- Pursue research opportunities in chemistry or biology.

- Participate in extracurricular and community activities to develop and demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills.

- Documentation of experience gained through job shadowing is often required.

- Work closely with advisors, faculty, and mentors who can help guide you through the process.

- Completion of the Dental Admission Test (DAT) is typical. Determine expectations for your preferred schools and begin preparation for the DAT no later than during your junior year.

Students who declare a Pre-Dentistry area of study are placed into the Chemistry major. If you wish to review or change your major or choice of pre-professional area of study, please work with your advisor.
