Agribusiness B.S.

Mayville State University’s BS in Agribusiness program provides students with the coursework, career field experiences, and skills necessary to prepare them for successful careers in agriculture and agribusiness-related industries.

A degree in agribusiness provides endless career opportunities. The curriculum focuses on the management skills necessary to succeed in small and medium-sized agribusinesses including the profitable operation of farms and ranches. Agriculture today is a high-tech industry, continually evolving to meet the changing needs of a growing world population. Success in agribusiness today requires more than just knowledge of agricultural methods — it requires an understanding of economics, finance, marketing, technology and entrepreneurship.

Upon program completion, students will be prepared to work in sales, ag cooperatives, banking, finance, farm & ranch management, and other agribusiness related fields.

The program requires students to take 50 core credits of agribusiness courses and 21 credits of agribusiness concentration courses. Concentration coursework may be related to a selected focus area and must be approved by the program coordinator or division chair.

Agribusiness majors must complete 36 credits of Essential Studies courses. The following Essential Studies courses are required as prerequisite courses for the program: COMM 110; ENGL 110; ENGL 120 or ENGL 125 (preferred); MATH 103 (College Algebra – may substitute a higher-level Math course with approval), ECON 201; and, ECON 202.

The recommended Essential Study prerequisite courses for the program: GEOG 103; BIOL 150, BIOL 150 lab; BIOL 151; BIOL 151 lab.

Students working towards the BS in Agribusiness may choose to complete a double major with a BS or BAS in Business Administration.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will apply agribusiness & business theories and/or methods to solve problems. 
  2. Students will demonstrate oral and written communication skills appropriate to the contemporary agribusiness & business environment. 
  3. Students will demonstrate individual contributions to accomplish identified team objectives.
  4. Students will participate in experiential learning which may include internships, service learning, leadership experience or other opportunities.
