EDUC 351 Remedial Reading Practicum

This course requires teacher candidates to apply scientifically-based, research-based, and evidence-based diagnostic, differentiated, and corrective reading strategies and assessments studied in EDUC 350 in a field-based experience. An initial meeting with faculty is completed, and the remedial reading placement is finalized prior to fieldwork. The field experience encompasses assessment administration, collecting student data, and implementing interventions that center on individual student supports related to phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency/accuracy, vocabulary, and comprehension as assigned by the in-school mentor teacher. The mentor teacher and faculty member will conduct pre- and post-lesson observation conferences throughout the field experience. Lesson planning, systematic and explicit instruction, reflective journaling, and a case study analysis paper are all requirements of the course that contribute to the skill development of teacher candidates specific to instructional and corrective reading intervention.  Prerequisite: EDUC 350 and Admission to Teacher Education. Cross-listed with SPED 351
