EDUC 318 Reading in the Elementary School

This is an introductory course in the teaching of developmental reading from pre-school through grade 8 using scientifically-based, evidence-based, and research-based best practices for the instruction of reading spanning various developmental levels. Teacher candidates explore a variety of instructional strategies, including Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), that support reading in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency/accuracy, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teacher candidates research, observe, create, and practice various instructional strategies across these five areas using systematic and explicit instruction in both coursework and in authentic school settings. Prerequisite: EDUC 250. Co-requisites: Distance- EDUC 301; On Campus- EDUC 301, EDUC 307, EDUC 324, EDUC 326.
