EDUC 318 Reading in the Elementary School

This course is a foundational course grounded in scientifically based literacy and language development practices. Students will explore the key pillars of reading instruction and the instructional implications of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension instruction. Students explore the impact of direct, systematic, and explicit instruction, learn about the reading and writing process, and consider the needs of special populations of learners. Topics include cognitive processes in reading, literacy, and language development, effective instructional methods and strategies, developmental reading stages, the reciprocal process between reading and writing, and an introduction to research-based approaches to teaching reading across grade bands. This course includes directed study, reflective reading and writing instruction research, and a field-based experience. This course requires students to have an approved background check and liability insurance prior to the field experience. Pre-requisite: EDUC 250 or EDUC 301 is a co-req for Elementary and Early Childhood Education Majors
