Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) - Health Informatics Track

Health Informatics Track Program Description

As MSN in Health Informatics with an option for a graduate certificate in Health Informatics prepares graduates for careers as clinical informatics system analysts, chief information officers, health care informatics software developers, implementation consultants, project managers, and informatics nurse educators.

Health Informatics Track Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the integration and application of advanced health informatics to guide evidenced-based practice, quality improvement, and knowledge development.
  2. Develop effective leadership expertise with focus on advanced information management skills and techniques to advance clinical practice and education within healthcare systems.
  3. Apply knowledge of computer science, information science, nursing, and informatics theory for the integration of technology in practice to promote the effective and ethical use of healthcare data and information.
  4. Synthesize informatics applications to reduce risks, improve healthcare delivery, and change policy for all populations.
  5. Manage projects in a multidisciplinary integrated healthcare informatics environment.

Health Informatics Track Curriculum Overview

 

Required credits to graduate with this degree: 37 SH Credits

  • 37 SH credits of 500-600 level NURS courses.
    • Undergraduate or graduate statistics course must be completed prior to NURS 570 course enrollment.
      • MaSU 300 level statistics course recommended. Transfer credit substitution of equivalent statistics course upon approval.
    • Includes (2) 100-hour practicum experiences completed local to the student’s residence
      • Thesis or evidence-based practice (EBP) project options for capstone course completion.
  • Maximum of 9 SH credits permitted for graduate credit transfer from a regionally accredited institution.
    • NURS graduate transfer credit (maximum 9 SH credits) permitted from institutions who hold national nursing program accreditation.
  • MSN core courses, statistics, and track specific courses can be completed in as few as 18 months (5 semesters).
  • Two plans of study are available: full-time 5 semester and part-time 8 semester options.
  • NURS courses are offered in 5-week blocks except for semester practicum and MSN Independent Project courses to allow the student to focus on one or two courses at a time.
  • Earned baccalaureate nursing degree (i.e. BSN or BAN) from a regionally accredited institution who holds national nursing program accreditation required for program admission.
    • Conditional program admission will be granted to applicants who apply in the final semester of their baccalaureate degree program with unconditional admission granted upon receipt of the final transcript with posted baccalaureate degree. Failure to fulfill the required admission conditions will result in dismissal from the program.
  • Current U.S. unencumbered RN licensure required throughout program enrollment in state anticipated for practicum course experiences.
  • Students are encouraged to work with the financial aid department to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate number of credits per semester for their individual financial aid and/or scholarship award.
  • Requests to change a plan of study from full-time to part-time or part-time to full-time requires written request by the student as well as Program Advisor and Division Chair approval.
