SPED 351 Remedial Reading Practicum
Cross-listed with EDUC 351. This course requires teacher candidates to apply research-based diagnostic, differentiated, and corrective reading strategies studied in EDUC 350 in a field-based experience with a reading mentor teacher. Initial faculty guidance prepares pre-service teachers for the practicum, where they will complete and analyze assessments and plan and implement scientifically-based interventions in reading instruction for an assigned student. Mentor teachers will conduct 2 formative and 1 summative observation with teacher candidates throughout the field experience. Lesson planning, direct and explicit instruction, reflective journaling, and a case study analysis paper contribute to the skill development of teacher candidates in the specific area of corrective reading intervention. Students must have access to a scanner to upload all course documents to the instructor and a digital video recorder to record teaching session(s) as needed for instructor review.
This course is offered as a one or two-credit option. The two-credit option is required for the North Dakota reading credential.
*Distance students will be required to work with their local school district education programs to arrange a practicum experience with a credentialed reading teacher. The mentor teacher will be required to support, observe, and evaluate the pre-service/in-service educator’s reading instruction in a one-on-one ongoing setting with an assigned student and supervise the pre-service teacher during scheduled times.
Prerequisites: EDUC 350 and Admission to Teacher Education.
