Transfer Credit
Mayville State University may accept college/university level courses recognized by the United States Department of Education from regionally accredited organizations or nationally recognized agencies, including the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the American Council on Education (ACE). MSU accepts Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) credits in transfer. CCAF is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Office of Academic Records evaluates transfer credits in consultation with appropriate faculty to determine whether a course meets the minimum comparability standard of 70% of content in order to be transcribed.Course comparability is determined through an assessment of learning outcomes and course content as established by the course outline, syllabus, and/or course description.
Transfer students may consult with their advisor and the appropriate Division Chair to define course equivalencies more precisely or to identify appropriate substitutions. If a substitution is approved, the Request for Substitution or Waiver of Academic Requirements form must be completed and submitted to the Office of Academic Records.
Credits earned through an institution that holds no accreditation is not eligible for Federal Title IV funds and will not be accepted in transfer. The Director of Academic Records and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) may research the validity and integrity of institutions when questions arise.
Students who wish to appeal the evaluation or denial of transfer credit must consult with their academic advisor first, if the concern is not resolved with the advisor, the student may request a formal review by the appropriate Division Chair. If the student wishes to appeal the Division Chair's decision, the student may submit an appeal to the VPAA. State level review is available in accordance with NDUS or SBHE procedures, when applicable.
If a course does not appear on the transfer evaluation under essential studies or the major/minor/specialization, it will be applied as an elective toward the 120 semester hours required for graduation.
Total hours earned and the grade point average from all transfer institutions are entered on the Mayville State University official transcript and are calculated for a cumulative grade point average, however, transfer courses do not appear on the MSU official transcript.
Limitations on Transfer Credit
Developmental Credit
Credit for developmental courses is not accepted in transfer if the course is developmental by definition of the transferring institution or if it is equivalent to a developmental course at MASU. Transfer credit earned at the developmental level will be transcribed on the official MASU transcript. However, these credits will not count toward earned credit or be calculated in the cumulative grade point average.
Graduate Credit
The transfer of graduate credits towards an undergraduate and graduate program is limited to 9 credits for a program and 6 credits for a certificate.Additional limitations may be set by specific graduate programs.
Credit by Examination or Life Experience
Credit earned by institutional examination or life experience is not accepted in transfer. See Placement into College Courses & Test Credit
Course Repeats
Courses repeated elsewhere prior to attending MASU will be accepted in transfer as indicated on the transferring institutions official transcript. Transfer courses taken from multiple institutions that have the same MASU equivalent will be considered as a repeated course.
General Education Transfer Agreements
The North Dakota University System (NDUS) has developed a general education transfer agreement to assist students who transfer within the 11 NDUS campuses and tribal colleges in North Dakota. GERTA is a guide to transfer general education courses within NDUS and other associated North Dakota institutions of higher education. Students who have completed the lower division General Education Requirement Transfer Agreement (GERTA) at one campus are deemed to have completed them at another. Students who have not completed GERTA prior to transfer will find that their general education coursework taken at one campus will be acceptable as general education coursework at another. Transfer students may still need to complete program pre-requisites for the major the student is pursuing.
Student’s general education requirements will be considered met if they meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S or Canadian institution or the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree as confirmed by a credential evaluator for international institutions.
- Specializations, minors and/or second majors are waived unless required for teacher education certification
- Successful completion of Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree from an accredited U.S or Canadian institution.
- Successful completion of an AA or AS degree who have completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum
- Students must provide MASU with an official transcript indicating completion as not all MnSCU AS degrees require MNTC completion.
