Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) - Nurse Educator Track

Nurse Educator Track Program Description

The Nurse Educator MSN program prepares the baccalaureate prepared registered nurse for advanced nursing practice as a nurse educator in academic and practice settings. Based upon the National League for Nursing (NLN) Nurse Educator Core Competencies, areas of emphasis within this track include facilitating learner development and socialization, creating a learner-centered environment, assessment and evaluation of teaching and learning, curriculum design and program outcome evaluation, continuous quality improvement, scholarship engagement, and exploration of various political, institutional, social, and economic forces impacting the role of the nurse educator. Graduates are prepared to fulfill an advanced nursing role as a nurse educator in practice and academic settings, and provide essential education, mentorship, and leadership to grow and develop the nursing workforce to improve patient and population health outcomes in the complex health care environment.

Nurse Educator Track Student Learning Outcomes

Building upon the Master of Science in Nursing Program Core Program Student Learning Outcomes, upon completion of the Nurse Educator track graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of program, curricular, and course development, evaluation, and revision strategies based upon sound educational principles, theory, research and contemporary health care trends.
  2. Facilitate learning and achievement of desired cognitive, affective and psychomotor outcomes based upon experiential knowledge and a variety of theory and evidence-based teaching, assessment, and evaluation strategies in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings and across all learning domains.
  3. Recognize the role of the nurse educator in facilitating nurse development and socialization aligned with the values and behaviors expected of a nurse.
  4. Engage in scholarship, service, continuous quality improvement, and professional development as a nurse educator to enhance the teaching and learning environments.
  5. Function as a change agent and leader in the educational environment based upon experiential knowledge recognizing the impact of political, institutional, social and economic forces.
  6. Develop in-depth knowledge of advanced clinical practice concepts in the areas of health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to lead positive patient care outcomes as a nurse educator.

MSN Program Nurse Educator Track Curriculum Overview

Required credits to graduate with this degree: 37 SH Credits

  • 37 SH credits of 500-600 level NURS courses.
    • Undergraduate or graduate statistics course must be completed prior to NURS 570 course enrollment.
      • MaSU 300 level statistics course recommended. Transfer credit substitution of equivalent statistics course upon approval.
    • Includes (2) 100-hour practicum experiences completed local to the student’s residence
      • Thesis or evidence-based practice (EBP) project options for capstone course completion.
  • Maximum of 9 SH credits permitted for graduate credit transfer from a regionally accredited institution.
    • NURS graduate transfer credit (maximum 9 SH credits) permitted from institutions who hold national nursing program accreditation.
  • MSN core courses, statistics, and track specific courses can be completed in as few as 18 months (5 semesters).
  • Two plans of study are available: full-time 5 semester and part-time 8 semester options.
  • NURS courses are offered in 5-week blocks except for semester practicum and MSN Independent Project courses to allow the student to focus on one or two courses at a time.
  • Earned baccalaureate nursing degree (i.e. BSN or BAN) from a regionally accredited institution who holds national nursing program accreditation required for program admission.
    • Conditional program admission will be granted to applicants who apply in the final semester of their baccalaureate degree program with unconditional admission granted upon receipt of the final transcript with posted baccalaureate degree. Failure to fulfill the required admission conditions will result in dismissal from the program.
  • Current U.S. unencumbered RN licensure required throughout program enrollment in state anticipated for practicum course experiences.
  • Students are encouraged to work with the financial aid department to ensure that they are registered for the appropriate number of credits per semester for their individual financial aid and/or scholarship award.
  • Requests to change a plan of study from full-time to part-time or part-time to full-time requires written request by the student as well as Program Advisor and Division Chair approval.
