Graduation Requirements
Essential studies and major and minor requirements are those stated in the catalog that is current at the time the student first enrolls at Mayville State University. These curricular requirements will be used by the student for a period not to exceed six years. The six-year period runs without regard to continuous enrollment. The student does have the option of electing the curricular requirements stated in the current catalog with approval of an advisor and Division chair. Students who have not graduated after six years from the time they first enroll at Mayville State University, will be subject to curricular requirements stated in the most-current catalog.
Course substitutions require approval of the faculty advisor, Division chair of the course involved, and the Registrar. Substitution forms are available from the Office of Academic Records. Students are responsible for securing this approval.
Application for graduation must be filed with the Registrar during the semester previous to the term in which the student expects to graduate. The deadlines for applying are listed on the academic calendar at the front of this catalog. The Registrar will audit the academic records of students expecting to graduate during the semester prior to graduation and will inform the student and his/her advisor of any remaining requirements before registration for the final semester. The Degree Audit is used for advising purposes and becomes an official document when signed by the Registrar.
Certificate Programs Requirements:
A certificate program is a specialized course of study requiring at least 9 credit hours at the undergraduate level or eight credit hours at the graduate level, per NDUS SBHE Policy & Procedure 409.
Certificates may be earned while in pursuit of a degree or as standalone programs of study. Certificate Programs will be annotated on an academic transcript. For each certificate program, a student must complete one quarter of the semester hours through Mayville State University. Candidates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 for all credits applied to the certificate program.
Students who receive only a certificate do not walk in commencement unless they have earned an associate’s or bachelor's degree at the same time.
Associate of Arts Degree Requirements: (A.A.)
- Candidates for the Associate of Arts degree must have earned a minimum of 64 hours and must also complete specific program requirements.
- A degree is granted only to students who have earned at least 15 semester hours in residence.
- Candidates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 for the general overall average, all credits applied to a degree program, and for all courses attempted.
- Students must complete a minimum of nine (9) letter-graded semester hours of the coursework required for the major from Mayville State University.
- Advisor and Division chair approval are required.
- The student is solely responsible for making sure all graduation requirements are met.
Bachelor’s Degree Requirements: (B.A. / B.S. / B.S.Ed. / B.U.S. / B.A.S. / B.S.N.)
- Completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours is required for a four-year degree. Thirty (30) semester hours must be in the upper-division courses (300-400) level. The credit hours must be distributed among the various subject matter fields in accordance with the program outlined for each degree and major/minor/specialization fields of study. Students are responsible to ensure coursework fulfills requirements for the major/minor/specialization in their designated degree. For additional Teacher Education Degree requirements, refer to the “Education” section of this catalog.
- A degree is granted only to students who have enrolled at Mayville State University for a minimum of two semesters and who have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours in residence.
- Candidates must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 in the essential studies core. All degrees require a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 2.00 Some programs, including those leading to licensure in teaching and nursing, require a higher GPA and are detailed in program information located in this catalog.
- Candidates must earn at least a 2.00 GPA for each major and minor field of study as well as any specialization area granted. (Some major and minor programs have a higher GPA requirement.)
- Students must complete a minimum of nine (9) letter-graded semester hours of the coursework required for the major, and a minimum of six (6) letter-graded semester hours of the coursework for the minor, specialization or concentration from Mayville State University.
- Advisor and Division chair approval are required.
- Four semester credits may be earned in each varsity sport towards graduation. Eight semester credits may be earned in each of these music courses: MUSC 127 Applied Lessons-Vocal, MUSC 128 Applied Lessons-Instrumental, MUSC 205 Jazz Ensemble, MUSC 210 Concert Band, and MUSC 215 Concert Choir. A total of 12 semester credits in these HPER and MUSC courses are allowed to fulfill graduation requirements.
- Students pursuing a degree form Mayville State University who already hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution must complete the essential studies program requirements for the specific major. The student must complete all requirements for the major and/or acceptance into the program.
- Students in a degree program will be required to meet with their academic advisor each semester prior to registration.
- The student is solely responsible for making sure all graduation requirements are met.
Master of Arts in Teaching Degree Requirements (M.A.T.)
- Gain acceptance into the MAT program (see admission criteria)
- Complete a minimum of 32 graduate semester hours.
- Complete courses successfully with a minimum grade of C or S in the approved program of study.
- Maintain a minimum graduate grade point average of 3.0 . Students may take a maximum of two (2) repeated courses.
- Assume responsibility for meeting all graduation requirements.
- Complete the M.A.T. program within a maximum of seven (7) years.
- Uphold the Code of Professional Conduct for Educators (Article 67.1-03, State of ND. Code of Professional Conduct for Educators) during all clinical placements along with all University policies.
- Students may transfer up to nine (9) semester hours towards for the degree. Transfer course(s) must be evaluated by the Dean of Education and Graduate Studies. Courses must be an equivalent substitution for the prescribed M.A.T. curriculum.
Master of Science in Nursing Degree Requirements (MSN)
- Gain acceptance into the MSN program (see admission criteria)
- Complete a minimum of graduate semester hours for either MSN track as follows:
- Nurse Educator Track: minimum of 38 graduate semester hours.
- Nursing Leadership & Management Track: minimum of 37 graduate semester hours.
- Complete courses successfully with a minimum grade of C in the approved program of study.
- Maintain a minimum graduate grade point average of 3.0.
- Repeat no more than one course during program enrollment.
- Assume responsibility for meeting all graduation requirements.
- Complete the MSN program within a maximum of seven (7) years.
- Uphold all University policies, the Code of Ethics in the MSU Student Handbook, and the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements throughout program enrollment.
- Students may transfer up to nine (9) graduate semester hours towards the degree. Transfer course(s) must be evaluated by the Dean of the Division of Nursing and must be an equivalent substitution for the prescribed MSN curriculum.
